Welcome to the 1884 Seneca County Courthouse Cornerstone page -

Cornerstone on the edge before falling

Picture

This photo shows the cornerstone (in yellow oval) being dragged over to the edge of the wall before it fell to the ground.

Cornerstone on ground exposing time capsule

Picture
This photo shows the cornerstone on the ground after it tumbled and rolled over several times.  The copper time capsule box can be seen (in yellow oval) as it's been torn open when the heavy stone lid was removed.

First close-up view of the time capsule

Picture
This photo shows how the time capsule looked after it was pulled from the cornerstone.  The lid was retrieved later.  Fortunately, there weren't any items lost, as far as we know.

A view of the coins from the time capsule

Picture
Here's a look at all of the coins from the time capsule (except for the 1784 Spanish coin which isn't in this photo).

The Tiffin Edison Electric Illuminating Co.

Picture

Here's a letterhead from the Tiffin Edison Electric Illuminating Company.  This paper mentions the brief history of the company, it's stock value and it's electrical capacity (1,000 lights with 850 already working).

An 1884 I. L. St. John's Almanac

Picture

I. L. St. John was a pioneer druggist arriving in Tiffin in the 1840's.  He was very successful & very eccentric.  This item wasn't on the inventory list from the 1884 Tiffin newspapers, and it's a very exciting treasure to find among the contents of the time capsule!
